El-P - Fantastic Damage
This, honestly, is tied for 1st as my favorite hip-hop album of all time. Oddly enough, the other one is produced by El-P and features him in a few songs.
But anyway, this one was a game-changer. It’s dark, gritty sci-fi beats laced with El-P’s acid tongued lyrics make a full album that hits so fucking hard that it’s like being punched by a bus. Depressing and uplifting at the same time, this will get you nodding your head with a giant smile on your face while you try to catch all of the rapidfire lyrics coming out like a machine gun.
Ok, too many similes.
The original thing that attracted me to this one were the beats. The word “gritty” is the best description I can give you, but they’re so amazingly layered and dense that even the instrumental version of this one is almost as incredible. When you actually listen to what El-P has to say, that’s when this truly begins to shine. It’s not even ‘for a white guy’ rapping, this dude is beyond legit. So dark, so good, SO SO good. And it should be, this is the guy that owns Definitive Jux records and has more amazing records attributed to it than Warner Brothers (ok, that’s an exaggeration).
Grab the shit. It’s fucking awesome.
